WD Huddersfield, which owns the town’s Kingsgate Shopping Centre, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kirklees Council to build a 120,000 sq ft extension.
Under the plans, the extension will be anchored a 50,000 sq ft major store, though a tenant has yet to be found for this, with four other large stores. An additional 360 space multi-storey car park is also part of the scheme.
The council estimates that 300 construction jobs will be created during the build stage.
Council leader Mehboob Khan said: “We know that improving the retail offer is important to our residents and this expansion fits part of a wider plan for attracting investment to create the environment for economic growth. WD are long-term investors in Huddersfield and we are delighted that they want to move forward with plans for the £40m expansion of the Kingsgate Centre – a development that will considerably strengthen the town’s offer and attract more shoppers and greater spend.”
