The Southern Multifunctional Framework involves the management and delivery of £800m of works, mostly consisting of station upgrades and civil engineering. It may also include electrification, power, signalling, telecommunications and track work.
The framework will cover primarily Anglia, Kent, Sussex and Wessex routes but may also be extended to other parts of the UK rail network. It is envisaged that four contractors will be selected for the framework agreement, each covering a different route.
The works will require the potential to provide design for the works.

A separate framework is also being prepared for £2bn-worth of electrification works. It is envisaged that 15 contractors will share this workload for the National Electrification Programme over the course for seven years.
