The work was carried out through Berkeley's 'own-build scheme', where employees may "enter into an arrangement, at commercial rates, with the group for the construction or renovation of their own home".

It is thought that Pidgley paid out for rebuilding work on his 16th century home in Windsor.

The news was published in Berkeley's annual report for the year to 30 April 2010, which also revealed that Pidgley took home a remuneration package of £2.4m, not including share awards, the same as last year. He received a salary of £750,000 and a bonus of £1.5m.
