Morgan Ashurst has been awarded a £7m contract by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) to build a four-storey, eco-friendly teaching facility for specialist sciences in Preston, Lancashire.
The new facility, named the JB Firth Building, will house the schools of Forensic & Investigative Sciences and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. It will include four laboratories for up to 160 students as well as two chemistry rooms, one analytical laboratory and a fire laboratory. Inside, there will be a striking atrium and open plan staircases.
It will be linked via a three-storey walkway to the existing Maudland Building on Maudland Bank, where the science departments are currently based.
Morgan Ashurst is aiming to achieve a BREEAM rating of Excellent for the scheme, which includes several energy-saving features including a solar water collection system and rain water harvesting.
The project is being managed by Gardiner & Theobald and the architect is ADP. Both companies are based in Manchester.
The project is scheduled to be completed in November 2010.
