The contract for the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) involves the section from El-Marg to New El-Marg station. Work includes the construction of 1.2km of double tracks and the station at New El-Marg, which will be connected to the main line and to the control centre of Line 1.
The extension is designed to allow NAT to provide a more efficient service in the area of El Marg, which is carrying more and more passengers every day.
Alstom’s scope of work for this project includes the design, supply and installation of power supply, signalling and telecommunications equipment. Work will not interrupt the operation of the line and will take 24 months.
On December 2015, NAT awarded Alstom a contract to provide a signalling system to equip the new maintenance depot of the same Line 1. The line is the backbone of the Greater Cairo underground metro network and has a ridership of two million passengers per day.
