The ballot covered Amey staff working in a wide range of locations across the country on rail infrastructure contracts.
RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: “Our members working for rail contractor Amey have voted overwhelmingly for action giving us a strong mandate that will now be considered by our executive.
“This campaign has one objective - to get a fair deal for our members that rewards the hard work that they put in to deliver the companies contracts.
“RMT remains available for talks and this ballot, with a near two to one majority for strike action and even bigger majority for action short of a strike - demonstrates to the Amey senior management the strength of feeling on the ground.”
