Asda plans £500m store expansion roll-out this year

23 Jan 12 Supermarket group Asda is planning to invest £500m in store construction this year.

Asda said that it will build 25 new stores and three depots this year and refurbish and extend a further 43 existing stores.

The new stores will total 600,000 square feet of net selling space in a combination of superstores, small format supermarkets and Asda Living stores.

A new depot will be built in Rochdale; a depot in Scotland will be replaced to add capacity; a former Netto depot in Yorkshire will be upgraded.

Asda's investment and job creation plans were unveiled during a UK visit by Doug McMillon, president and CEO of US parent company Walmart International. He said: "Our continued investment is because we see a tremendous opportunity in front of us.”
