The contract will see a new tourist and residential destination created at Haitang Bay in an as-yet undeveloped part of the coastline. Sanya is a popular tourist destination in China with the presence of many luxury hotels. Haitang Bay, one of the five major bays in Sanya, is being dubbed the new ‘Chinese Riviera’.
Asia’s largest duty-free shopping centre is under construction to the north-west of the site and Atkins’ complex should benefit from the retail mall and complement the development.
Atkins’ scope of work consists of concept design development, schematic design and landscaping. The masterplan is centred on seashell-like curvaceous buildings and landscaped platforms that terrace towards the sea, optimising beach views. A wide landscaped corridor runs along the main axis of the site, ensuring uninterrupted access to and from the shopping centre, apartments, hotel resort facilities and the beach front.
Five distinct landscape zones have been created for ceremony, leisure, family relaxing, villa gardens and the waterfront beach.
The complex has a total gross floor area of 97,000m2 above ground. The 38,000m2 Autographic Collection Hotel has 300 rooms and supporting amenities includes a ballroom, restaurants and spa facilities.
Tian Hong, Atkins’ associate director in China, said: “Open views, rich landscape and privacy are key drivers to this masterplan strategy. As inspired by marine sea shells and waves, the building and facilities are seamlessly integrated with lush landscape, and the boundary between indoor and outdoor is blurred. Delightful tropical life is celebrated inside and out. Guests can appreciate the open sea view from the raised hotel lobby immediately upon their arrival.”
