Some 92% of builders surveyed recently by the Australian Industry Group said they had been offered dodgy products. And a recent Australian Competition & Consumer Commission investigation resulted in an urgent recall of faulty electrical wiring affecting an estimated 40,000 households and businesses across Australia.
Bob Baldwin, parliamentary secretary to the minister for industry, has convened a national meeting with building industry leaders to develop an action strategy.
“These faulty products are not meeting Australian standards and causing significant risk of fire or failing the most basic of stress tests,” said Baldwin. “Families building a new home or renovating their home should be able to have confidence that their dream build is being completed to the highest standards with the best quality products.”
Industry members attending the meeting include the Master Builders Association, Housing Industry Association and Property Council of Australia.
