The ‘Gateway Project’ will provide a distinctive entrance to the campus from Salford Crescent railway station.
Designers have targeted a BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’ for the building.
Completion is set for early 2016.
Construction of the seven-storey building, designed by architect Stride Treglown, was originally scheduled to begin in early 2012 and be complete by April 2014. . At that time the project cost was estimated at £35m.
The investment is part of wider plans to improve the campus. Last year the University refurbished and extended its 1960s Chapman Building at a cost of £9m. During the summer a further £1m was spent improving library services.
