Wayss & Freytag’s share in the project is over €35m.
The two-lane tunnel is a key element in the Olten-Aarau railway - halfway between Basel and Zurich - which is being widened to four tracks by the Swiss government and the Swiss railway company SBB.
For the construction of the Eppenberg Tunnel, the joint venture will use a mix-shield tunnel boring machine, which is designed to tunnel through both hard rock and wet ground. The tunnelling machine has an outer diameter of approximately 12.8m.
The project also includes the construction of three emergency and escape tunnels, five shafts and niches for M&E installations. The joint venture expects to complete the tunnel in August 2019.
