The troughs will act as drainage and cabling channels at National Grid sites in Canterbury and Burwell where Alpha has contracts to construct flood defence systems designed to cope with 100-year flood events.
At National Grid’s 132/400kV Burwell substation in Cambridgeshire, 435 of the 1220mm-long trough sections are being installed to carry excess rainfall to one of nine pump chambers. These will then transfer the water to the outside of a 1km-long, 1.6m-high concrete perimeter wall topped with an electric fence that Alpha is also building.
For casting the U-shaped trough sections, Poundfield constructed a set of 10 special steel moulds incorporating the necessary profile to enable Alpha to fit GRP cover grills flush with ground level.
