A contractor has yet to be appointed but the aim is to start work on site in February or March 2015.
Project manager Richard Wigginton said that the contract was currently out to tender and a contractor would be selected in the New Year.
The new development is supported by funding from Carphone Warehouse founder David Ross, a former student who has now given more than £10m to his old university.
The David Ross Sports Village, as it is to be called, will include a main sports hall, 200 station fitness suite, sports science facilities and office accommodation. There will be two adjoining 10-court sports halls, an indoor sprint track, an archery and fencing hall, dance studios, a martial arts dojo, squash courts and, for the rather less active, a snooker hall.
Completion is expected in June 2016.
