Birse to protect Derbyshire villages

30 Aug 12 Birse Civils has been awarded a £5.1m contract by the Environment Agency for a new flood protection scheme in Derbyshire.

The Lower Dove Flood Risk Management Scheme is designed to provide protection to more than 1,600 homes and properties in the villages of Scropton, Hatton, Tutbury and Egginton.

The works are concentrated on the Lower River Dove, which forms the Staffordshire/Derbyshire county border. Works comprise raising existing flood embankments as well as construction of new flow control structures and flood embankments.

Existing highways will also be raised to meet new flood defence levels and flood walls will be built next to existing buildings, some of which are listed.

Currently, the areas have a one-in-20-year flood risk but Birse will reduce that to one in 100 years.

Birse Civils regional managing director Tony Jackson said: “We are delighted to receive another significant award from the Environment Agency. It follows extensive ECI [early contractor involvement] and community engagement work carried out in collaboration with the Environment Agency.”
