Blast brings down Sheffield chimney

23 Jan 12 Demolition contractor Hughes & Salvidge yesterday brought down a 45m-high chimney in Sheffield at 8.15am yesterday morning with a controlled explosion.

Down it comes!
Down it comes!

The reinforced concrete chimney was one of the last remaining structures on the 50 acre site owned by Finnish steel company Outokumpu.

Work began on clearing the former stainless steel cold rolling plant in May 2011.  The project is estimated to have been one of the largest stand-alone demolition projects in 2011 and is set to be handed back ahead of schedule in March 2012.

Professional Demolition Consultancy (PDC) Ltd was the blasting expert on the job.

Hughes & Salvidge operations director and Greg Lannon said: “This was a smooth operation and another example of the successful partnership between Hughes and Salvidge and PDC.”

Police operated a rolling road block to manage traffic on the neighbouring M1 motorway for the explosion.
