The work will allow freight trains to change tracks without hampering the movement of passenger trains. The aim is to facilitate the free flow of freight traffic on a major national rail artery between Sydney and Newcastle. Site work will be conducted in a constrained environment alongside existing rail tracks without interrupting current train movements.
The project is starting immediately and construction will end in late 2015, with an estimated workforce of 400 people.
Particular attention will be paid to the environment: all waste water along the new track will be recycled and the removal of spoil will be closely monitored. The alliance will also remove contaminated material in certain parts of the 100-year-old railway site and preserve heritage buildings.
