More than half will be spent in the next five years. Brazil hosts the World Cup in 2014 as well as the Olympics in 2016.
The investment will cover work on than 8,000km of roads and 8,000km of railways. The programme covers nine stretches of highway and 12 sections of railway. Investments in ports and airports will be announced separately.
Private sector investment will be targeted with the launch of concessions to carry out the improvements."We are teaming up to expand the country's infrastructure, to benefit its people and its private sector, to pay off a debt of decades of delay in investment in logistics," president Dilma Rousseff said. She emphasised that the assets were not being privatised.
