The new special education needs school, designed by Frankham Consultancy Group, will support the educational needs of children with both physical and learning disabilities in the borough, providing primary and secondary education and acting as a feeder to the existing sixth form for older pupils.
Phased construction has already begun with the demolition of the old Hay Lane and Grove Park schools that are merging to become The Village School. Temporary premises have been installed on the grounds of Kingsbury High School, where some 150 pupils will begin their new school year in September 2011. The Village School will open its doors in time for the summer term of 2013.
In addition to the school campus, the project includes the construction of a new short break and respite centre that will, in due course, replace the services currently provided elsewhere in the borough.
Brent council is contributing £21m to the project and the government is providing an additional £8m to improve Special Education Needs (SEN) provision in the area.
Brent director of regeneration and major projects Andy Donald said: “Leadbitter has built its reputation in the education sector on delivering first-class projects and we are looking forward to working with them to deliver a building which provides great teaching spaces which are safe, secure and meet the needs of all the students and their varied and complex physical and learning needs.”
Cliff Thomas, regional director of Leadbitter’s Central ե֭ division, said: “This is an ambitious and complex project, and our reputation for working closely with communities to deliver this type of scheme has no doubt helped us in securing the contract in a very competitive tendering process.”
