Approximately 30 primary school construction contracts worth £50m in total are in line to be awarded through the BuildSurrey website over the next two years in what is being described as the biggest school expansion programme in the county’s history.
Growing demand fuelled by a surging birth rate means Surrey needs to create 10,000 school places over the next three years after building capacity for 6,000 places – the equivalent of 15 new primaries – since 2010.
On top of the school work, £10m of other council building and repair deals will be offered through the site if the council’s cabinet gives the go-ahead tomorrow (4th February).
BuildSurrey was set up by the council last year to help keep 60% of council spending on goods and services with local businesses.
