The 10m-high Großmarkthalle will measure 80m at its widest  and will provide traders with 40,000m2 of space featuring a fully glazed wall onto the street and an underground garage with 850 parking spaces.
The building’s design features triangular gables that rise from the roof and divide the hall into various sections for fruit and vegetables, flowers and other produce.
The combination of aesthetics and functionality were key elements in the jury and the city councils’ decision to choose the design. Rosemarie Hingerl, the councillor in charge of construction said: "In particular the light and open design of the hall and the opening onto the Sendling district are particularly fitting." The building’s structure was also praised for having only minimal columns inside.
