The Arup Building, of Brutalist design and opened in 1971, Â houses the University Museum of Zoology, the Department of Zoology and the Babbage Lecture Theatre. It also houses the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy and the University Computer Service, but these are relocating to new premises in 2013. The university intends to take the opportunity of this move to refurbish and upgrade the whole building, with completion envisaged by February 2016.
Alterations will also be made to the 15,000 sq m building to provide office accommodation for the Cambridge Conservation Initiative.
A consultant design team will initially be appointed to progress the design concept and a building contractor will then be engaged on a two-stage develop and construct contract. Stage 1 will include contractor appointment, novation of the design team, detailed design, and subcontractor procurement. Stage 2 will comprise the construction and engineering works on site.
The selected project manager will be responsible for all project management services from the selection and appointment of the design team to completion of the project.
