Civils work start in August 2016, delivered and managed by Clugston ե֭, alongside its French process engineering partner, ե֭s Industrielles de la Méditerranée (CNIM). CNIM is main EPC contractor for the £340m project.
The facility, near Sittingbourne, is expected to become operational in 2019.
The Wheelabrator Kemsley plant will receive up to 550,000 tonnes of waste per year from Kent and southeast England and generate 43 MW of electricity for the National Grid. It will also provide 70 tonnes of steam heat per hour to the energy-intensive Kemsley Paper Mill next door, owned and operated by DS Smith.
Clugston and CNIM have previously worked together to deliver energy-from-waste projects in Shrewsbury, Leeds, Lincoln, Cannock and Wilton.
Clugston ե֭ managing director Steve Radcliffe said: “The project for Wheelabrator Technologies is the latest in our growing portfolio of energy-from-waste plants, and is certainly one of the largest combined heat and power developments we have been involved in. We are delighted to have been chosen by Wheelabrator to deliver such an important facility and we look forward to working with the company over the next three years and beyond.”
