The old Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel has been bought by Tower Hamlets Council for £9m.
The council says that it hopes that the hub will be a catalyst for regeneration of the area
The Grade II listed hospital was founded in 1740 by businessmen and philanthropists. Its more famous patients include Joseph Merrick, dubbed the Elephant Man, who died there in 1890.
The council said that it would fund the project “through efficiencies”.
