The alignment and specifications of the 2.8km canal have been set out and construction is to start in the first quarter of 2013. Parsons is consultant for the scheme.
Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has taken the initial steps towards the realisation of the project, which involves modifications of existing roads and bridges in order to extend the canal from the Sheikh Zayed Road up to the beach of the Arabian Gulf.
The construction of the Project, which costs about 1.5 bn dirham, requires the construction of bridges rising up to 8.5m meters over the Canal on the key roads intersecting with the Canal. The canal will vary in width from 80m to 100m. The area alongside the 2.8km extension is seen as becoming a popular area for tourism and sports.
