The competition is being organised on behalf of Britain’s Energy Coast West Cumbria and Magnus Homes by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Competitions unit, with the support of Places Matter! the architecture centre for the Northwest.
The fantastic harbour-side setting presents a unique opportunity to continue the transformation of Whitehaven’s former working port, via a circa GBP £10m mixed-use development of luxury residential apartments and high quality office accommodation.
The five short-listed teams were selected following an anonymous appraisal of the 139 schemes submitted to the first stage of the open competition. The short-listed teams (in alphabetical order) are:
- Austin-Smith Lord LLP
- Renato Sarno Group Srl and Proginvest Srl
- Richard Murphy Architects
- RMJM Scotland Ltd
- ShedKM Architects
The short-listed schemes have been developed further and the original design proposals refined following feedback from the Stage 1 assessment. The five schemes will be on display at Unit 2, Pears House, Whitehaven Harbour from Saturday 6th November to Friday 12th November 2010 between 10.00a.m. and 4.00p.m. daily.Â
The comments taken from the public consultation will be fed through to the judging panel for the final assessment in late November where a winner will be selected. Â
Paul Crooks(Programme Manager, Britain’s Energy Coast West Cumbria) commented: ‘We received some very useful and thoughtful comments from the public during the first stage and we would urge all those interested in the future development of Whitehaven to see how the shortlisted teams have responded to the challenges set for them’Â
