The contract includes managing an ancillary recycling centre and transfer station.
Ferrovial Services will work in consortium with Egeo, Amândio Carvalho and Gabriel Couto on the project in Póvoa do Varzim, near Porto in Portugal. It is one of the largest public sector contracts awarded in Portugal in recent years.
The landfill will be used to dump municipal solid waste and ash from the waste-to-energy plant managed by Lipor, the contracting authority, in the city of Maia. Lipor manages waste in eight municipalities in the Porto region.
The contract runs for 25 years, including the 18 months envisaged for construction of the new landfill. The Maia landfill is expected to reach capacity during this period, and Lipor will switch over to the new landfill once construction is completed.
