Work will start immediately on a new £6m office block that is needed to enable delivery of the main works.
The main programme, scheduled to complete in 2019, includes a new £80m 'Hot Block' for all critical care, surgery and other complex care procedures, replacing several wards and the site's energy centre and completely refurbishing the Emergency Department.
A key element of the scheme is to improve public facilities, including car parking facilities.
The contractor was appointed through the ProCure21+ framework.
It was only two days ago that Galliford Try was named preferred bidder for construction of the £72m East Lothian Community Hospital in Scotland too.
Galliford Try’s new chief executive Peter Truscott said of the Luton & Dunstable contract: "This prestigious scheme is one of the largest on the ProCure21+ framework and is a fantastic win for our business. Galliford Try has a growing presence in the healthcare market and this is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate our capability in delivering complex public sector healthcare projects."Â
