Gothenburg is often plagued by floods, with the danger coming from the sea as well as from the river Göta, which runs through the city. The study focuses on possibly installing two flood barriers - one to be positioned on the sea-side, the other upstream at a fork in the river Göta.
The study should be finalised by the end of this year. The combination Arcadis-Sweco was selected in a public bidding process, in part due to Arcadis' experience in flood barrier design including a barrier in Nieuwpoort, Belgium.
"There is growing international interest in our water management know-how," said Gert Kroon, who leads the Arcadis activities in the Netherlands. "We are experiencing an increase in the effects of climate change. Thanks to our extensive water management expertise, we are able to address these challenges."
