The project is for a 45km high-speed train between Keflavik Airport and Reykjavik Central with estimated completion in 2019-2020. Project preparation and tendering process will begin next year for the line, which will have an average speed of 180km/h.
The project includes a 35km of above-ground railway from the airport to Hafnafjordur town and a 13km underground railway. Four railway wagons with a capacity of 1,000 people per hour will operate in each direction, with the possibility of doubling the capacity at a later stage.
There will be an above-ground station at the airport and underground station in Reykjavik Central. The estimated passenger demand is between three million and four million passengers a year 2023, rising to up to 6.5 million in 2033.
The response deadline for the tender is June next year. Â
