ե֭ of the 700,000m2 terminal building at Abu Dhabi International Airport will start in the third quarter of this year, with the opening planned in 2017. Piers will accommodate up to 65 aircraft, including the Airbus A-380. The check-in is capable of handling around 8,500 passengers per hour.
The building will be constructed using approximately 69,000t of steel, more than 680,000m3 of concrete and nearly 500,000m2 of steel and glass cladding. There will also be 135,000t of rebar, 360,000m2 of suspended ceilings and 325,000m2 of natural stone flooring
The project will include two key phases starting with the four-year construction phase. ե֭ will be followed by the nine-month operational readiness assessment phase (ORAT), when thorough tests of all aspects of the terminal will take place to ensure readiness from the first day of operation.
ADAC Chairman HE Ali Majed Al Mansoori said: "Abu Dhabi Airports Company is looking ahead to an exciting five years of growth focusing on increasing traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport and on expanding the airport’s infrastructure to support this growth. Leading and supervising the delivery of this mega-infrastructure, whilst managing one of the fastest growing airports in the world, is a defining responsibility for the team; a responsibility central to ADAC’s commitment to provide the best for Abu Dhabi, travelers and airlines.”
The terminal has been designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates together with Ove Arup, NACO and BNP Associates.
During the construction process, the area immediately surrounding the MTB is also being developed to ensure the required infrastructure and facilities are available to support the operation in 2017. These include the aircraft parking stands, terminal roads and connections to the Abu Dhabi/Dubai highway. Procurement for these projects is under way to ensure delivery in phases between 2014 and 2016.
