The proposed facility would enable up to 500,000 tonnes of residual waste (the waste left after recycling) per year to be bulked up and transported by rail to an energy-from-waste facility in Teesside.
The plans have been drawn up by Sita UK but the facility will only go ahead if Sita wins its bid for the Merseyside Recycling & Waste Authority’s (MRWA) resource recovery contract. Sita is on a shortlist of two for the MRWA contract.
Sita UK planning manager Corrina Scott-Roy said: “Our proposal would utilise an existing rail transfer facility and with some minor alterations provide an efficient and sustainable method of transporting waste to an energy-from-waste plant which would generate heat and electricity in Teesside. This would mean that 500,000 tonnes of waste is put to good use rather than being sent to landfill.”
