The homes will be built at Factory Road on the site of former boot and furniture factories. The development includes six bungalows, 26 one-, two- and three-storey homes and eight flats, all built using traditional construction methods.
A scout hut is being demolished to make way for the development but Leadbitter will build a replacement from the materials recycled form the original.
The plans were originally rejected by Blaenau Gwent Council in the face of local opposition but that decision was overturned on appeal.
Charlie Scherer, regional director of Leadbitter’s West and Wales Housing division, said: “We are working very closely with the Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and Melin Homes to construct outstanding properties that will provide much needed new housing for the people of Brynmawr.”
Melin Homes chief executive Mark Gardner said: “We have worked extremely hard with our construction partners, Leadbitter, to overcome significant technical obstacles and I am delighted that this ground-breaking regeneration scheme is about to get underway. I would like to express my thanks to Welsh Government for making the site available and for part funding the schemes through their Strategic Capital Investment Fund. I would also like to thank Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council for selecting us to deliver this project and for their continued support.”
