The university has published two separate contract notices, with the smaller project given a start date of next May.
The second, larger, project is described as ‘an aspiration’.
First up is an £8m refurbishment for the Fine Art, History of Art & Cultural Studies (FAHACS) department, in a 1920s Grade II listed building. The proposed scheme consists of 1,965m² over five floors.
Planning approval and listed building application for the scheme will be submitted in October 2014 with a tender issue date of December 2014. A 10 month construction period has been allocated to achieve a completion date of March 2016.
The university also “has an aspiration” to refurbish three floors of its Engineering Building plus basement and other spaces, and to undertake backlog maintenance on the remainder of the building. The budget for this is £20m. Built in 1960, the Houldsworth Building, as it is called, is 12,200m2.
