The works involve 18km of track duplication between Rocklands and Stanwell on the Blackwater Rail System, earthworks and large diameter drainage infrastructure upgrades, and construction of three rail bridges.
The duplication is designed to carry coal trains that are 1.7km in length along the Blackwater System to the balloon loop near Gladstone for unloading.
Leighton Contractors general manager northern construction Hugh Boyd said that the company was  proud to be part of the significant project, which will see a vital link created between the new Wiggins Island Coal Terminal and mines in the Southern Bowen and Surat Basins.
Õ¥Ö¼§ of the duplicated track is scheduled to start this month. At peak production it is anticipated Leighton Contractors will employ 150 people on the project.
