The Derby City Council project involves the construction of around 800 new homes on a 30-acre brownfield site, as well as new schools and community facilities. The overall scheme will take more than 10 years to complete.
Work will start in spring 2012 on the first phase of the Urban Village scheme, which will include around 70 homes, 2,500 sq m of commercial space, community facilities, a central park and a boulevard between Derby railway station and the city centre. Phase 1 will be built on land provided by Derby City Council and the East Midlands Development Agency and helped by acquisitions financed by the Homes and Communities Agency.
“Castleward Urban Village will be a wonderful development for the city of Derby,” said Cllr Harvey Jennings, leader of Derby City Council. “Castleward will replace a 30-acre brownfield area of the city with a sustainable community of something like 800 homes, including extensive affordable housing, schools and community spaces. It will provide a fantastic lift for the city and embodies our ambition to continue to invest in Derby.”
Dave Bullock, managing director of Compendium Living, said: “We believe Castleward Urban Village will provide a great new residential neighbourhood and be a perfect environment for people who want to enjoy the benefits of city centre living with the comfort and amenity of high quality family housing. It will help support the Council’s continuing drive for economic growth and add another choice for prospective residents in this vibrant city.”
Lovell regional director Noel Adams says: “As part of Compendium Living, we look forward to helping create this exciting new community in the heart of Derby, using our expertise in urban regeneration to deliver this ambitious development programme.”
