The refurbishment and reconfiguration of the existing wards will improve separate facilities for men and women and en suite facilities for patients. The contract also includes the construction of a single storey extension with a zinc roof. In addition the works will include the stripping and replacement of the existing Westmorland slate roof and provision of new insulation to meet current standards.
The buildings are Grade I listed and as such works are to be carried out under the supervision of English Heritage.
All works are being carried out in a live environment, where health facilities continue to function in adjacent areas.
Bootham Park Hospital was opened in 1777 and is the country’s oldest mental health institution building still in original use.
Work has recently started on site and will conclude in spring 2011.Â
