Mansell starts on Kent University rooms

2 Mar 11 University Partnerships Programme (UPP has appointed Mansell for a £24m project to construct four-storey student accommodation blocks at Keynes College, University of Kent in Canterbury.

The on-campus development, provided through a long-term partnership between UPP and the University of Kent will comprise 495 new-build student rooms next to the existing Keynes College. The majority of rooms will be ensuite, constructed in eight room clusters, although 45 rooms will be created in five townhouses and there will  be five purpose built one-bedroom flats. There will also be a separate facilities management hub.

The project is designed to achieve a BREEAM “Excellent” rating. To achieve this, Mansell plans to use recycled materials where it can. The scheme incorporates innovative environmental measures, and is based upon UPP’s award winning Eco Residence model of sustainable development.

UPP chief executive Sean O’Shea said: “We are delighted to be working with Mansell and the University of Kent on this £24m scheme, which will provide sustainable, affordable student accommodation. We are particularly pleased to continue providing significant private sector investment to universities at this time, helping to further improve the student experience at the university and ensure the timely delivery of important projects such as this.”

This is the third project UPP has awarded to Mansell and follows the completion of Woolf College in December 2008.

Work has started on site and is scheduled for completion in September 2011.
