May Gurney has been named preferred bidderfor Bristol City Council's waste collection, street cleaning and winter maintenance contract.

The deal is valued at around £96m over seven years, with potential for a seven-year extension.

May Gurney is also mobilising recently won long-term contracts for Surrey County Council (highways maintenance), Severn Trent Water and Scottish Water (utilities).

The company’s AGM, being held in Norwich today, will hear that the latest contract win rounds of a strong first quarter of the current financial year.

May Gurney chairman David Sterry, in his last act as chairman before stepping down, will tell shareholders: "We are delighted to report that during the first three months of the current financial year, we have continued to build upon our strong performance recorded in 2010/11 and have maintained our forward order book at £1.4 billion (including framework agreements but excluding extensions).

“Our recent acquisition, Turriff, is integrating to plan, busy tendering for contracts, and is performing well. We are confident that it will provide us with a platform to deliver growth in the Scottish market.

“First quarter revenues have been strong as a result of the increase in highways maintenance activity on the back of recent government funding, and our successful mobilisation of AMP5-related contracts.”

He added: “On the basis of our performance during the first three months, visibility of earnings and strong cash generation, we are confident of our prospects for the current financial year."

As previously announced, Mr Sterry is succeeded as non-executive chairman today by Margaret Ford, the Baroness Ford of Cunninghame, who is also chair of the London 2012 Olympic Park Legacy Company.
