Station buildings and weight-restricted bridges are coming down to make way for the new development, which has been designed by local architects Nicoll Russell Studios in conjunction with Jacobs Engineering.
The plan is for a five-storey crescent-shaped hotel building. A full planning application is expected to be submitted later this year.
The work is all part of the Central Waterfront project to create a new public square and attractive arrival space outside the station.
