Administrators from Deloittes are expected to be appointed to take over the company today.
The fall of MJN Colston is likely to impact on progress at Carillion’s £430m Southmead hospital project in Bristol, scheduled for completion in 2014. MJN Colston is M&E contractor on the job.
At last count, MJN Colston had more than 500 directly employed staff working from offices in Gateshead, Blackburn, Coventry, Bury St Edmunds, Croydon, Bristol, Bridgend and Exeter, as well as company HQ in Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees.
The company dates back to 1890. More recent prestige projects include Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, which helped take turnover past the £100m mark.
MJN Colston was also one of the original Besna Eight members of the Heating & Ventilation Contractors Association that proposed to impose new contract conditions on its employees. It was swift to back down, however, in the face of employee opposition – a full five months before Balfour Beatty and NG Bailey came to the same decision.
A statement is expected from Deloittes later today.
