Electrification of the existing 12-mile stretch of non-electrified Gospel Oak to Barking line will facilitate the introduction of electric rolling stock for London Overground services and to provide an alternative electrified freight path from the Thames estuary docks.
The project consists of electrification along the whole of the line together with new electrical supplies and distribution.
The line runs through cutting for approximately half of its length, while the remainder runs elevated, predominantly on Victorian viaduct. The western end of the line joins the North London Line at Gospel Oak while the eastern end terminates at Barking. The line serves 10 intermediate stations.
Substantial alterations are required to structures such as bridge deck raising and track bed lowering in order to obtain the necessary head clearances under bridges and through tunnels.
