The university is a lead partner in the Newcastle Science City initiative, which is trying to push Newcastle as ‘a city of science’.
A 24-acre site is being developed as Science Central in bid to attract science and technology organisations to a mixed new community than covers educational, business, residential and leisure uses.
The first phase of enabling, infrastructure and public realm works are already under way on Science Central and the first building on the site, The Core, has been completed.
The second building planned for the site is the Urban Sciences Building (USB). Â
A contract notice has now been published in the Official Journal of the EU to appoint a main contractor for the design and build of the USB. Net construction cost is estimated at £36.8m, plus a further £3m for fit-out. Overall development cost is £58m
The university is looking to appoint a main contractor by November 2015, with completion of the build by end of August 2017.
