Northumberland PV contract for GB’s new renewables company

4 Jul 11 GB Group’s new renewable energy subsidiary has won its first contract - a £7m deal to fit photovoltaic (PV) panels on 400 council homes and 130 public buildings for Northumberland County Council.

The contract starts next month and runs until the end of March 2012. GB said that it will recruit and train local people to work on the project.

GB Renewable Energy also plans to offer solar panels to private homeowners in the region, providing free electricity for 25 years from the point of take up. The plan is for GB to provide PV panels for free, to reduce household bills, and then make its money by collecting the feed-in tariff.

The new company is also offering air-source and ground-source heat pumps, biomass boilers and combined heat and power (CHP) heating.

GB Group chairman and chief executive Martin Smout said: “The Committee on Climate Change has set a target for the UK to reduce emissions by 60% by 2030, to achieve this we need to move away from oil and gas and focus much more on renewable energy.  Councils will have higher targets to look at the efficiency ratings of their buildings and we believe that homeowners will see increasing incentives to help them afford the changes needed to their properties to help them make the switch from traditional fuels to renewable.

“At the same time as the renewable agenda becomes ever more urgent, the credit crunch made us examine what we were doing as a company, how we were operating and where the opportunities of the future lay.   Within the GB Group we have worked on a number of high profile environmental schemes such as Bradford Sustainable Student Village, which is the first BREEAM Outstanding multi-residential scheme in the country, and therefore have in-depth knowledge of renewable solutions in-house.  Launching GB Renewable Energy therefore makes perfect sense both from an environmental and a business point of view.”
