The development, on the site of the now demolished NAAFI (Navy, Army & Air Forces Institution) building, will deliver 517 study bedrooms, 59 flats and 73 studio rooms, built in three buildings up to nine storeys high.
The buildings, which will have shops and cafés on the ground floors, were designed by O’Connell East Architects (OEA) and feature façades using a combination of render, zinc and stainless steel cladding over a stone plinth.
The first task for Leadbitter was to build a road through the centre of the confined site to allow access to three apartment block locations. Landscaped courtyards will also be created.
Rob Bradley, regional director of Leadbitter’s Western ե֭ division, said: “This project demonstrates Leadbitter’s expertise in delivering high-quality student accommodation for our clients across the UK.”
The new accommodation, on Notte Street in the centre of Plymouth, is now visible from the roadside as the steel structure starts to take the shape of the building. The development is scheduled to house its first student residents by August 2013.
