Portakabin has won a £44m deal to supply a three-school campus for the 23,000 m2 Riverside Schools scheme in east London. It is Portakabin’s sixth contract for Barking & Dagenham
The campus will be fabricated from Yorkon modular building components at the factory in York. It will provide space for a 10-form entry secondary school standing five-storeys high, as well as a 630-place primary school, a special educational needs school and a nursery.
The schools will be constructed from 387 steel-framed modules, craned in over two phases starting in spring 2016. The largest module will be 18.75 metres long and weigh 20 tonnes.
Portakabin director Simon Ambler said: “We expect this project to change the face of off-site construction in the education sector. It demonstrates really well how Yorkon building solutions can be used to meet the urgent provision of school places – and for a scheme of this scale and complexity.”
