The A1 Lobley Hill to Dunston improvement scheme was given the go ahead by the Chancellor in the 2012 Autumn Statement. The aim is to start construction by March 2015 and it is expected to take 18 months to build.
The project involves adding another lane to the A1 and building a mile-long relief road parallel to the A1 in both directions between Lobley Hill and Dunston, reconfiguring the current merge and diverge arrangements.
The Highways Agency has put an estimated cost on the main contract of anywhere between £22.2m and £33.6m.
