Richard Williams, formerly group development director, takes over as managing director.
Howells had been managing director of the employee-owned company for six years and helped the company reach its target of £1bn in revenue, aided by more than 15 acquisitions in the last three years and opening new offices in France, Turkey, Ukraine, Serbia, Uganda, Japan and Australia.

The two men are supported on the group board by strategic development director Kevin Stovell and director for Europe/Africa Guy Leonard, and for Asia Pacific/Australasia Kevin Dixon.

Howells said: “Mott MacDonald has been able to ride the storm of the past few years of turbulent world economic conditions due to our diversity, our multi-disciplinary skills, global presence and staff delivering innovation and excellence on projects. Our partnership approach matched with rigorous attention to cost and performance has stood us in good stead.
