Venezuela’s new national football stadium - designed in collaboration with Arup and Schlaich Bergermann und Partner - sits on the hillside providing views of the city to the northeast. A lightweight, brightly-coloured bicycle-wheel canopy roof ‘hovers’ over the stadium.
Simon Smithson, lead partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners for the project, said: “The hillside site created an unusual challenge and the design reflects this with terraces cut into the landscape giving way to a series of floating esplanades that provide access to the various levels of stadium.”
The Estadio Nacional de Fútbol de Venezuela has been designed as part of a masterplan to develop the La Rinconada area of Caracas. The masterplan includes a transport interchange and also establishes a new metropolitan park protecting the surrounding hillsides from further development. Within the park existing sport facilities, including a racecourse, are augmented by the new facilities, which also include a bus station designed by RSHP and a baseball stadium.
