It already had a presence in the Russian construction market through its industrial mortars and insulation businesses.
The new site - which also contains a gypsum quarry - is located close to the village of Gomzovo, in the Nizhny Novgorod region. It represents an investment of about €70m (£60m) and has a workforce of 87 employees.
The plant was officially opened last week by Saint-Gobain chairman and CEO Pierre-André de Chalendar at a ceremony attended by representatives from the local and regional authorities.
“The start-up of this new plant is an important step in the group’s development within the Russian habitat and construction markets,” said de Chalendar. “Russia’s climate, its rising purchasing power and pressing need for housing means that it’s a country with great potential for the group.”
