The project includes a 170m-high rolled compacted dam creating a reservoir volume of 6,000 million cubic metres. The hydroelectric plant will produce 6,460 GWh a year. The new hydroelectric plant for Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) will have an installed capacity of 2,200MW.
Ethiopia is aiming to become Africa’s leader in terms of energy production through this project together with GIBE III - which went into operation recently - and Grand Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile. It already exports energy in Kenya, Sudan and Djibouti, its closest countries. Â
